Art and science converge beautifully right in the middle of the 7th Street Public Market. I'm not sure I've ever seen a latte that meets the look and taste of what you get at Not Just Coffee. With pre-school in full swing for both of our kids, Josh and I took advantage of our free time to spend a few hours together catching up on blogs, reading, and relaxing. We decided to visit this place we both have read and heard a lot about, but I had not yet seen.
This was only Josh's second visit after he met a colleague there last week, and he insisted on joining me when I mentioned I wanted to check it out this morning.
I see now why people rave about this place. From ingredients, to preparation, to presentation, and then to final taste, it is pure perfection. Cups of coffee are prepared one-by-one, via the pour-over method. Lattes are rich and multi-textured, with artful infusions of milk frothed to a well balanced consistency.
James Yoder, the owner of Not Just Coffee, is a skilled artisan dedicated to his craft. As you sit at the counter, you witness a carefully executed, detail-oriented process completed with swift efficacy and unbounded love that only a master brings to his work.
James worked his magic creating one of the most delicious lattes I've ever had, or could even imagine. They rival even the best I've tasted when living in Paris or Florence. To say these were unique or unlike anything else in the world is a bit of an understatement. James is a grand master of coffee making, if not one of the best in his craft, right here in Charlotte, NC. He reminds me of many of the qualities I witnessed in Jiro as he prepared sushi.
Three lattes and one large pour over coffee later, we were positively buzzing.
What an unexpected delight it is to experience Not Just Coffee. It showed me that even with something as "simple" as coffee, which humans have drank for thousands of years, you can still deliver something highly innovative, and much better tasting, than anything else out there. Coupled with the show and ambiance, you have a combination unlike anywhere else.
